Tennis fans around the world have a reason to celebrate as Serena Williams has officially announced her return to competitive tennis, nearly four years after stepping away from the sport.
The 23-time Grand Slam champion is set to make her comeback later this month at the prestigious Queen’s Club Championships in London, where she will compete in the women’s doubles event.
Williams, now 44, has not played a professional match since her third-round exit at the 2022 US Open. Her return was confirmed through a social media post featuring a video of her back on the court, accompanied by the message: “Good news travels fast.”
Speculation about a comeback had been growing since it emerged that the former world number one had re-entered the sport’s anti-doping programme, a necessary step for players looking to return to competition. At the time, however, she dismissed the rumors, insisting she had no plans to resume her career.
Now, those rumors have become reality.
Reports indicate that Williams has received a wildcard entry into the women’s doubles draw and is expected to partner rising Canadian star Victoria Mboko.
Speaking about her return, the tennis legend described Queen’s Club as the ideal venue to begin a new chapter in her career, noting that some of her most memorable achievements came on grass courts.
The announcement has generated excitement across the tennis world, with tournament organizers welcoming the return of one of the sport’s most celebrated figures.
Widely regarded as one of the greatest players in tennis history, Serena holds 23 Grand Slam singles titles — the most by any woman in the Open Era.
