Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nyesom Wike, has taken a fresh swipe at former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, accusing him of avoiding difficult political battles and positioning himself only where opportunities are already laid out.
Speaking during an interview on Arise TV, Wike questioned Obi’s leadership style, arguing that leadership is not about moving from one political platform to another whenever challenges arise. According to him, leaders are expected to confront problems head-on, remain steadfast during difficult periods, and build structures rather than abandon them.
Using a popular local expression, Wike said Obi prefers what he described as “food is ready” or “Mama Put” politics, suggesting that the former Anambra governor often joins situations where the groundwork has already been done instead of enduring the struggle required to build political institutions.
The former Rivers State governor pointed to Obi’s political journey, noting that he had been a member of different political parties over the years. Wike argued that each time internal crises emerged, Obi chose to leave rather than stay and fight for solutions.
Drawing comparisons with his own political experience, Wike said he remained in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) despite serious disagreements and political pressure. According to him, leadership requires persistence, courage, and the ability to withstand challenges rather than seeking easier alternatives.
Wike also used the interview to defend President Bola Tinubu’s administration, praising the president for taking what he described as bold and difficult decisions, particularly the removal of fuel subsidy. He argued that while such policies may cause temporary hardship, they are necessary steps toward long-term economic progress.
According to the minister, many previous administrations identified the subsidy regime as a major problem but lacked the courage to take decisive action. He maintained that leadership is not merely about recognising problems but having the strength to make tough decisions that can solve them.
Wike stressed that every meaningful reform comes with challenges and sacrifices, adding that leaders must be willing to endure criticism if they genuinely want to achieve lasting results.
