Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nyesom Wike, has taken a swipe at opposition parties, declaring that recent controversies surrounding their congresses and primary elections have exposed what he described as hypocrisy within their ranks.
Speaking during his monthly media chat in Abuja, Wike said parties like the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) had spent years accusing major political parties of imposing candidates and lacking internal democracy, only to find themselves battling similar allegations.
According to the former Rivers State governor, the disputes that trailed the primaries and congresses of both parties have raised serious questions about their claims of being credible alternatives to established political platforms.
Wike mocked the opposition parties for presenting themselves as political “saviours” capable of changing Nigeria’s political culture, saying the internal crises currently rocking them have revealed a different reality.
Referring to complaints and protests that followed recent primary elections, he argued that even the newer parties have struggled to conduct transparent exercises without controversy.
The minister specifically pointed to disagreements that emerged within ADC, where some presidential aspirants openly rejected the outcome of the party’s primary election over alleged irregularities and voter disenfranchisement.
He also referenced disputes within NDC, saying the party has faced its own internal challenges despite presenting itself as a fresh alternative to older political parties.
According to Wike, the developments have shown that Nigerians should judge political parties by their actions rather than campaign promises and public statements.
“Nigerians now know you’re all liars,” Wike said, insisting that many of the parties making accusations against APC and PDP are now facing the same problems they once criticised.
The FCT minister further argued that older political parties may have their shortcomings but have gained experience navigating Nigeria’s complex political environment over the years.
He maintained that political parties should focus on strengthening their internal processes rather than making promises they cannot keep, adding that recent events have exposed the gap between political rhetoric and reality.
