The Kogi State Police Command has arrested a 52-year-old man after operatives allegedly discovered 339 wraps of substances suspected to be Indian hemp hidden inside a vehicle in Kabba, Kogi State.
The Commissioner of Police, Naziru Kankarofi, disclosed this during a press briefing held on Tuesday at the command headquarters in Lokoja.
According to the police boss, the arrest was made on May 9, 2026, during an intelligence-led stop-and-search operation carried out by officers attached to the Kabba Area Command.
Kankarofi explained that the operatives intercepted a Honda Pilot Jeep with registration number LSD 456 GE during routine security checks.
The vehicle was reportedly driven by one Chris Amos, 52, while another suspect identified as Bilat Joseph was travelling as a passenger.
“Upon conducting a thorough search of the vehicle, the operatives discovered 339 wraps of substances reasonably suspected to be Indian hemp concealed inside the vehicle,” the commissioner said.
Preliminary investigations, according to the police, revealed that the suspects allegedly collected the consignment from Ado-Ekiti in Ekiti State based on instructions from a man identified simply as “Alhaji.”
The police said the full identity and whereabouts of the alleged sponsor remain unknown.
“The suspects further stated that the illicit substance was to be delivered to Yola, Adamawa State,” Kankarofi added.
The commissioner confirmed that the suspects are currently in custody while investigations continue.
He added that the exhibits recovered from the vehicle have been secured pending further action by the authorities.
Kankarofi disclosed that security operatives are working to track down other members of the suspected drug trafficking network and ensure everyone connected to the crime faces prosecution.
He warned that illegal drug trafficking continues to fuel violence and other criminal activities across the country.
“The command will continue to sustain aggressive operations targeted at dismantling criminal syndicates and preventing the movement of illicit substances through the state,” he stated.
The police commissioner reassured residents of the command’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property through proactive policing, intelligence gathering and collaboration with other security agencies.
He also appreciated the Inspector-General of Police for continued support and commended Kogi State Governor for backing security operations in the state.
Kankarofi further praised residents for providing useful information that has contributed to recent operational successes recorded by the command.
