The African Democratic Congress (ADC) says it collaborated with the Accord Party during the August 15 Osun governorship election to prevent the All Progressives Congress (APC) from reclaiming the state.
ADC National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, disclosed this while speaking on Trust TV on Monday, saying the party anticipated that a divided opposition could give the APC an advantage.
The ADC candidate, Najeem Salaam, polled 17,180 votes, while Accord candidate Ademola Adeleke won with 511,067 votes. APC candidate Bola Oyebamiji came second with 444,815 votes.
Abdullahi said the decision to work with Accord was deliberate and supported by the party’s leadership.
“For us, victory means that APC was defeated,” Abdullahi said.
He explained that the ADC did not consider its candidate’s poor showing a failure because preventing the APC from returning to power was a major objective.
According to Abdullahi, the Osun outcome also showed that opposition parties could defeat the APC if they unite ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
However, he said the ADC would not claim sole credit for Adeleke’s victory, stressing that the people of Osun State ultimately determined the outcome.
“The credit belongs to the people of Osun state,” he said.
