Former Senate Leader Ali Ndume has commended President Bola Tinubu for approving salary increases for about 250,000 personnel of the Nigerian Armed Forces, saying the move will boost the morale of troops.
The President recently approved salary increases ranging from 30 to 80 per cent for military personnel, with the new rates expected to take effect next month.
Under the new structure, officers above the rank of colonel will receive a 30 per cent increase, those from colonel to warrant officer will get 50 per cent, while personnel from private to staff sergeant will receive an 80 per cent increase.
The adjustment will reportedly raise the Armed Forces’ annual wage bill from N660 billion to N924 billion.
Ndume, who previously chaired the Senate Committee on Army, said the salary review demonstrated the government’s commitment to improving the welfare of security personnel and tackling insecurity.
“The review of salary will go a long way in motivating our military personnel,” Ndume said.
He, however, stressed that improved salaries alone would not be enough to defeat terrorism and banditry.
According to him, troops also need timely access to weapons, ammunition, training and other operational equipment to effectively confront insurgents.
“I have always argued that aside better welfare package and training, what they need to deal with insurgents is prompt supply of arms and ammunition,” he said.
Ndume Seeks Direct Military Funding
The Borno South senator also called for changes to the way the military’s annual budget is funded, arguing that bureaucratic delays can affect military operations.
He proposed placing the defence budget on First Line Charge, saying this would reduce delays between government ministries involved in releasing funds.
“Mr. President should seize the initiative to ensure direct statutory transfer from the Federation Account for the military,” Ndume said.
Ndume said the proposed funding arrangement would allow the Armed Forces to access resources more efficiently and strengthen their ability to respond to security threats.
He also urged the President to ensure that the military receives the technological tools and other equipment needed to carry out its responsibilities.
