FIFA has officially abandoned its controversial proposal to bring private investment into the commercial operations of the FIFA World Cup, following widespread opposition from football governing bodies and stakeholders across the globe.
The decision marks a significant reversal for FIFA President Gianni Infantino, who admitted that the proposal had created deep divisions within the football community, making it impossible to move forward.
The initiative, known as the FIFA Forward Enterprise Project, was designed to generate additional funding to support FIFA’s member associations, particularly those in developing football nations.
However, the proposal faced strong resistance from several football bodies, with critics arguing that introducing private investors into the World Cup’s commercial structure could undermine the future of the game.
Announcing the decision on Friday, Infantino said FIFA had listened to the concerns raised by stakeholders.
“The FIFA Forward Enterprise project was intended to provide a basis for further strengthening our FIFA Member Associations and our sport worldwide, especially in those countries where support is most needed,” he said.
The FIFA president acknowledged that despite its intentions, the proposal had become too divisive.
“Having listened carefully to all the views, it has become clear that the project has created divisions that are no longer in the interest of the objective set out in the first place,” Infantino stated.
He confirmed that FIFA would no longer proceed with the project.
“Our purpose has always been—and will always be—to unite and improve. As a result, this proposal will not proceed,” he added.
Infantino also revealed that FIFA would begin fresh consultations with member associations, continental confederations and other stakeholders to explore alternative ways of supporting football development, especially in countries that need greater financial assistance.
“My intent is to bring all interested parties back together… with the objective to continue growing football everywhere, particularly in those countries that mostly need our support,” he said.
The withdrawal of the proposal comes after days of intense criticism and marks the end of one of FIFA’s most debated commercial initiatives in recent years.
