The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has commenced the public display of the personal particulars and academic credentials submitted by presidential candidates for the 2027 general election, including those of President Bola Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima.
The exercise, which began on Saturday, is part of the commission’s statutory responsibility under the Electoral Act 2026, allowing Nigerians to scrutinise documents submitted by candidates seeking elective office.
Documents displayed by INEC show that President Tinubu submitted his Bachelor of Science in Business Administration certificate from Chicago State University, awarded in 1979, alongside his National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) discharge certificate.
The documents also outline his work history, including his time at Mobil Nigeria, his tenure as Governor of Lagos State, and his current position as President of Nigeria.
Vice President Shettima’s records include his primary and secondary school certificates, a Second Class Upper Division degree in Agriculture from the University of Maiduguri, a Master’s degree in Agricultural Economics from the University of Ibadan, and his NYSC discharge certificate.
According to INEC, the display is intended to promote transparency and enable members of the public to examine candidates’ credentials.
The commission noted that under Section 29(3) of the Electoral Act 2026, Nigerians can request certified copies of nomination documents and challenge any information they believe is false through the appropriate legal channels.
The documents are being displayed at INEC offices nationwide, while campaigns for the 2027 presidential and National Assembly elections are scheduled to begin on August 19, in line with the commission’s election timetable.
