Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), has said President Bola Tinubu has his respect, stressing that political disagreements should focus on policies and performance rather than personal attacks.
Obi made the statement on Friday at the 2026 All Nigeria Editors’ Conference in Enugu, where he also spoke about accountability in public office and the role of the media in democracy.
The former Anambra State governor said he would not insult or personally attack any political office holder, including President Tinubu, even when he disagrees with government policies.
“I cannot abuse any governor. I cannot abuse anybody in government. I don’t need to abuse people even in federal government. I’ve never abused anybody. Who has seen me calling President Tinubu’s name? Never! I will not do that. He’s the President of the country, he has all my respect,” Obi said.
However, Obi made it clear that respecting public office holders does not mean avoiding criticism of their decisions or performance.
“But I can argue on other issues, whether you’re doing well, or you’re not doing the right thing. That is allowed,” he said.
Obi urges media to scrutinise leaders
Obi also called on editors and journalists to pay attention to the records, statements and qualifications of political leaders.
He argued that the character and conduct of people in leadership can influence the values of the wider society.
“We must, because the leader… the character and behavior of the leader exemplifies the value of the society. And the leader must live it,” he said.
The NDC candidate’s comments come as political parties and potential candidates prepare for the 2027 general elections, with Obi also urging the media to promote issue-based political discussions and hold public officials accountable.ee
