Former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai says his ongoing legal troubles have given him a different perspective on some of his relationships, particularly the silence of people he previously supported.
El-Rufai shared his thoughts in a statement posted on social media on Wednesday, saying the experience of the past few months had taught him important lessons about life and relationships.
The former governor is facing legal proceedings over allegations arising from his time in office. He has denied wrongdoing and has maintained that the allegations against him should be tested in court.
Reflecting on the reactions of people around him, El-Rufai said some colleagues, friends and family members whom he had publicly supported in the past had remained silent during his current difficulties.
He said the experience had made him reconsider how he views certain relationships.
According to El-Rufai, adversity can reveal the nature of relationships, although he stressed that his decision to reassess some associations should not be interpreted as an attack on those involved.
He said he had spent much of his life supporting colleagues, friends, family members and causes he believed in, often without expecting recognition or anything in return.
The former governor added that he had made those decisions based on his faith, upbringing, personal values and conscience.
He also said he would not resent people who had chosen not to offer him the same support now that their circumstances had changed.
“I have no regrets about standing by people or for causes when I believed it was right to do so,” El-Rufai said, adding that he did not expect everyone he had supported to respond in the same way.
He further said he had no intention of seeking revenge over what he described as any injustice, ingratitude or injury directed at him.
Instead, El-Rufai said he would leave ultimate accountability to Almighty Allah and concentrate on maintaining peace with his conscience and faith.
“In the end, each of us must live with the choices we make, and posterity will render whatever verdict it sees fit,” he said.
His comments come as he continues to face legal proceedings and remains involved in challenges relating to the investigations against him. (Premium Times Nigeria)
