Former Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein has been sentenced to 15 years in prison in New York for sexually assaulting former production assistant Miriam Haley in 2006.
The sentence was handed down on Wednesday in a Manhattan courtroom, following Weinstein’s conviction at a retrial in 2025. (Internazionale)
Weinstein, 74, was originally sentenced to 23 years in prison in 2020 after being convicted of sexually assaulting Haley and raping actress Jessica Mann. That conviction was overturned by New York’s highest court in 2024, leading to a new trial. (Los Angeles Times)
At the retrial, Weinstein was again found guilty of the criminal sexual act involving Haley. Jurors, however, did not reach a verdict on the separate rape allegation involving Mann, and prosecutors later decided not to pursue another trial on that charge.
Before his sentence was announced, Weinstein addressed the court and asked for leniency.
He expressed regret and apologised to people he had hurt, while also maintaining his innocence regarding the broader allegations against him. (Los Angeles Times)
Haley also spoke during the sentencing hearing, describing the lasting impact of the assault and the years of legal proceedings that followed.
Prosecutors had asked the court to impose a 20-year sentence, while Weinstein’s lawyers argued for a shorter term.
The latest sentence adds another chapter to Weinstein’s lengthy legal battle, which began after numerous allegations of sexual misconduct against him became public in 2017.
Those allegations helped trigger the global #MeToo movement, which encouraged women to speak publicly about sexual harassment and abuse, particularly involving powerful figures.
Weinstein is also facing a separate sentencing process in California over a rape and sexual assault conviction stemming from a 2013 incident in Los Angeles. A California appeals court upheld that conviction in June but vacated his previous 16-year sentence, requiring resentencing.
The New York sentence means Weinstein will remain in prison as his legal proceedings in California continue.
