US President Donald Trump has rejected growing calls for tighter government regulation of artificial intelligence, arguing that excessive controls could weaken the United States’ position in the global race for technological leadership.
Trump made his position known in several posts on Truth Social on Monday, dismissing warnings about the risks posed by increasingly advanced AI systems and describing fears that the technology could eventually threaten humanity as a “HOAX”.
He also accused critics of AI development and the expansion of data centres of being involved in what he called a “SICK conspiracy”, while comparing the concerns to previous warnings about climate change that he has dismissed.
Trump argued that the United States already has adequate regulatory and criminal laws to address misconduct by AI companies, insisting that additional restrictions should not come at the expense of American leadership in the sector.
The President’s position comes after Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and SpaceX founder Elon Musk backed calls for AI companies to slow the development of increasingly powerful systems while stronger safety measures are considered.
Trump later spoke by phone with Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang while Huang was appearing at the All-In Summit in Los Angeles.
During the call, which Huang placed on speakerphone, Trump sought to reassure the audience about the technology, saying, “the robots will not be taking over.”
Vice President JD Vance has also questioned why leading AI companies are calling for government regulation of the technology, reinforcing the administration’s resistance to broader controls.
