Vice President Kashim Shettima has departed Abuja for Luanda, Angola, where he will represent President Bola Tinubu at the 21st Extraordinary Session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the African Union (AU).
Shettima left Nigeria on Saturday ahead of the high-level meeting, which will focus on conflict resolution, peacebuilding and stability across Africa.
According to the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Communications, Stanley Nkwocha, the vice president will join African leaders and other stakeholders to discuss practical approaches to tackling regional security challenges and strengthening continental mechanisms for preventing and resolving conflicts.
Nigeria is expected to play an active role in the deliberations, given its longstanding involvement in peacebuilding and conflict resolution efforts across Africa.
Nkwocha said Shettima, who is accompanied by senior defence and security officials, will deliver President Tinubu’s address and present Nigeria’s position on the issues being discussed.
The vice president is also expected to reaffirm Nigeria’s commitment to promoting peace and stability across the continent before returning to the country after his engagements in Angola.
