Iran has ruled out negotiations with the United States until its conditions are fulfilled, with a senior security official warning that Tehran will not be distracted by what he described as mixed signals from Washington.
Mohsen Rezaei, Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, made the position known on Tuesday in a post on X, responding to comments by US President Donald Trump that Tehran was eager to reach a deal and that Washington could resume negotiations.
“The failing Nation of Iran wants to make a deal, quickly and badly,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.
Rezaei urged Iranians not to be distracted by what he described as Trump’s conflicting statements, which he said had ranged from rejecting negotiations to expressing willingness to return to talks.
“The stakes around oil and the straits have changed. Damage control won’t stop what’s coming,” he said.
He then made Tehran’s position clear, stressing that negotiations would not resume until Iran’s demands were met.
“No talks until Iran’s conditions are met. Period!” Rezaei stressed.
The latest development comes against the backdrop of previous efforts by Washington and Tehran to reach an agreement and bring an end to the wider regional conflict.
On June 18, the United States and Iran signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) aimed at ending the conflict in the region on all fronts, including Lebanon.
Under the agreement, both countries were expected to begin negotiations within 60 days, with the deadline set for August 17, in an effort to reach a final agreement.
However, the future of the negotiations remains uncertain following a series of recent escalations between the two countries.
