Nigerian singer Adekunle Gold has explained why he reported an X user to the authorities after the individual falsely claimed that his daughter, Deja, had died.
The singer made the disclosure during an appearance on One54 Africa, where he said he immediately reported the matter after coming across the post.
Gold explained that although he is able to tolerate criticism and negative comments directed at him, he would not accept attacks or false claims involving his family.
The 39-year-old singer said the matter was taken to court, where the individual was sentenced to two years in prison or given the option of paying a fine.
He added that social media users interpreted the incident differently from what actually happened, but he chose to follow the legal process rather than take matters into his own hands.
“So somebody had put out fake news about my family losing our daughter and I can’t take anything, you can talk about me all day, I’m cool,” he said.
“I signed up for this, not my daughter. So when I saw the news, obviously, I did the right thing… I reported to the authorities.
They took it to court and the court sentenced him to two years imprisonment or he should pay a fine.
“The whole internet went crazy. I did the right thing. I didn’t even do what other people would do. You know: find the boy, beat him up. I just went through the right channel and he was dealt with.”
Background
The case followed a post by Samuel Adeboye Adeyeye, an X user popularly known as Swanky 001, who shared a photo of a candle alongside the caption: “My sincere condolences to the Adekunle family. RIP to Deja”.
On May 14, social media influencer Pamilerin Adegoke disclosed that Adeyeye had been sentenced to two years in prison after pleading guilty to charges of cyberbullying and defamation.
Adeyeye was released in June.
Adekunle Gold married singer Simi in a private wedding ceremony in January 2019. The couple welcomed their first child in 2020 and their second child on March 10, 2026.c
