First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has appealed to voters in the South-East to support her husband, President Bola Tinubu, in the 2027 presidential election, saying she wants to see a prosperous Nigeria and enjoy the country in her old age.
Mrs Tinubu made the appeal while speaking at a women’s empowerment programme in Owerri, Imo State, where she urged residents of the region to vote for the President for a second term.
“Make una vote for Mr President, we go work for una and Nigeria go better,” she told the gathering, adding that she wanted to “enjoy Nigeria at old age.”
The empowerment programme, coordinated through the Office of the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Sustainable Development Goals, is targeting 18,500 women across the country.
In the South-East, 500 women from each of the five states received business equipment, including generators, grinding machines, gas cylinders and industrial ovens. In Imo State, Governor Hope Uzodimma provided equipment for an additional 2,000 women, increasing the number of beneficiaries in the state to 2,500. Mrs Tinubu also announced a ₦100,000 cash grant for each beneficiary present.
Her appeal comes as President Tinubu prepares for the 2027 presidential election amid opposition realignments and preparations by political parties ahead of the polls.
President Tinubu, who was elected in 2023, has secured the All Progressives Congress (APC) ticket for the 2027 election. He is expected to face major opposition contenders, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and Peter Obi of the New Democratic Coalition (NDC).
In the 2023 presidential election, Tinubu of the APC won with 8,794,726 votes, defeating Atiku of the Peoples Democratic Party, who polled 6,984,520 votes, while Obi of the Labour Party finished third with 6,101,533 votes.
Since taking office, Tinubu has implemented major economic and structural reforms under his Renewed Hope Agenda, including the removal of the fuel subsidy, liberalisation of the foreign exchange market and changes to the tax system.
The reforms, however, have attracted criticism from opposition parties and some Nigerians over their effects on living conditions, with concerns including inflation, higher food and transport costs, naira depreciation and insecurity.
According to the timetable released by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the 2027 general elections will begin on January 16, 2027, with the final voter register expected to be released on January 11. The presidential and National Assembly elections are scheduled for January 16.
Political campaigns are expected to end on February 18, while a possible presidential runoff is scheduled for February 28. Governorship and State Assembly elections are slated for March 6, 2027.
