The All Progressives Congress in Imo State has announced Prince Alex Mbata as the winner of the party’s senatorial primary for Imo East Senatorial District ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Mbata secured victory after polling 121,680 votes during the primary election conducted by the party in the state.
The result was announced on Monday by Rear Admiral Kayode Williams (retd.), who chaired the House of Representatives Primary Elections Committee and also acted as the returning officer for the exercise.
While declaring the result, Williams stated that Mbata met all constitutional and party requirements for the election and recorded the highest number of valid votes cast.
According to him, the APC candidate fulfilled the conditions laid down by both the party and the laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria before emerging victorious in the contest.
The announcement was made at the APC Owerri Zonal Office, where party leaders, supporters and stakeholders gathered for the primary election.
Mbata’s emergence came after one of the frontline aspirants, Dr. Chijioke Kaduru, withdrew from the race shortly before voting began.
Kaduru’s decision to step down cleared the path for Mbata to record a comfortable victory in the exercise.
The Imo East primary formed part of the APC’s nationwide process to select candidates for National Assembly positions ahead of the next general election cycle.
