African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore has promised to transform Nigeria into a major global sports hub if elected president in the 2027 general elections.
Sowore made the pledge on Saturday while participating in the 2026 Enugu City International Marathon, where he competed in the 10-kilometre race for the second time.
The AAC candidate said his administration would invest heavily in sports infrastructure and create the right environment for athletes to excel across different sporting disciplines.
He also promised that Nigeria would qualify for every FIFA World Cup during his proposed eight-year presidency.
“If I’m president of Nigeria, we are not missing any World Cup for my eight years. I’ll make sure that happens.”
Sowore said Nigeria has abundant sporting talent but has failed to maximise its potential because of poor administration and inadequate support for athletes.
He described sporting events such as road races as important for promoting healthy living, youth engagement and community development, urging more states to organise similar competitions.
The presidential candidate also highlighted the economic potential of sports, describing it as part of the “orange economy” that could generate significant revenue and create opportunities for young Nigerians.
“There’s a big economy out there that is known as the sports economy.”
Sowore cited Brazil and Kenya as examples of countries that have successfully used sports, particularly football and athletics, to build international recognition and economic opportunities.
He questioned why Nigeria, with its large population and abundant talent, has struggled to compete strongly in long-distance running, swimming and other sporting events.
The AAC candidate said his administration would ensure athletes receive the infrastructure, support and professional environment needed to compete successfully on the international stage.
He also criticised the management of Nigerian football, insisting that the country has enough talented players to achieve better results if the sport is properly administered.
Sowore said Nigeria’s failure to qualify for the World Cup should not continue, promising to make consistent qualification a priority if elected.
