Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has dismissed the impact of the latest US sanctions against Tehran, saying Washington will not achieve its objectives through economic pressure.
Pezeshkian made the comments on Wednesday, according to Iranian news agency ISNA, after the United States announced fresh measures aimed at increasing economic pressure on Iran.
He said Iran had prepared measures to withstand the new sanctions and would continue resisting pressure from Washington.
“America will not achieve anything with economic pressure at this stage.”
Iran Rejects New US Sanctions
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent recently announced plans described as an effort to impose “economic asphyxiation” on Iran, while warning other countries against supporting Tehran.
Iranian officials, however, have played down the potential impact of the measures, pointing to the country’s experience with decades of sanctions imposed after the 1979 Islamic Revolution.
Pezeshkian said Iran’s preferred approach remained dialogue and negotiation but insisted that Tehran would not give in to economic pressure.
He said the country had faced similar challenges in the past and would continue to withstand them.
Hormuz Remains Key Point of Dispute
The latest escalation comes as negotiations between Iran and the United States remain stalled, particularly over the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important energy routes.
Traffic through the waterway has been severely disrupted, affecting the movement of oil and liquefied natural gas and contributing to concerns over global energy supplies.
Iran has maintained control over the strait since the conflict began on February 28 and has sought to impose fees on vessels using the route.
Washington has demanded a return to unrestricted navigation, while US President Donald Trump has claimed that the United States has “total control” of the waterway.
The continued dispute over Hormuz, combined with the latest sanctions, has further increased tensions between Tehran and Washington.
