Chairman of the Izalatil Bid’a Wa’ikamatis Sunnah (JIBWIS), Sheikh Sani Yahaya Jingir, has denied claims that he dislikes Christians, describing the allegations as false and a misinterpretation of his recent remarks.
Jingir came under criticism after comments he made at a mass wedding organised by the Kano State Government for 1,500 couples were interpreted by some Nigerians as divisive along religious lines.
Speaking at a one-day national symposium in Jos themed “Enhanced Political Participation and Social Justice as a Panacea for Unity and Development in Nigeria,” the cleric said his remarks were not intended to express hatred towards Christians or other non-Muslims.
“A lot of people are saying I dislike Christians. I didn’t say I dislike Christians. It is a lie. My remarks were misinterpreted.”
Jingir said Islam teaches fairness, justice and love towards people of different faiths and sects, adding that Muslims would be accountable for any injustice committed against non-Muslims.
He also cited the example of Prophet Muhammad (SAW), saying he lived peacefully with people of other faiths, and urged Nigerians to promote peaceful coexistence.
The JIBWIS chairman called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, state governors and other political leaders to govern with fairness, regardless of the ethnic, religious or political affiliations of the people they lead.
“You should lead with justice and fairness to all Nigerians.”
He also maintained that every Nigerian has the right to freely choose and support any candidate of their choice during elections.
Jingir urged Nigerians to embrace peace, unity and togetherness, stressing that sustainable development cannot be achieved in an atmosphere of insecurity and division.
“Without peace, there will be no development.”
He called on Nigerians to work towards strengthening peaceful coexistence among the country’s different ethnic and religious groups.
