The Kogi State Government has ordered an investigation into the deaths of four members of the same family in Ihima community, Okehi Local Government Area, after they reportedly ate Amala made from cassava flour.
The incident has raised concern in the community, particularly after reports that the family’s dog also died after consuming the same food, prompting questions about possible contamination or poisoning.
The Commissioner for Information and Communications, Kingsley Femi Fanwo, said Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo had directed the Commissioner for Health to immediately investigate the circumstances surrounding the deaths.
According to Fanwo, the investigation will determine whether the food was contaminated or whether another medical or environmental factor was responsible.
“The Chief Servant is deeply concerned by this tragic incident and has directed the Commissioner for Health to immediately investigate the circumstances surrounding the deaths, with particular attention to the possibility of food poisoning or food contamination.”
The government has directed relevant agencies to properly examine available samples and other evidence in line with public health procedures. The Ministry of Health is also expected to work with relevant agencies and stakeholders during the investigation.
Fanwo said the reported death of the dog after eating the same food would also be considered as part of the investigation.
Meanwhile, the government urged residents to remain calm and avoid speculating about the cause of the deaths until the investigation establishes the facts.
Governor Ododo commiserated with the bereaved family and the people of Ihima, assuring residents that verified updates would be made available as more information emerges.
