A fire outbreak has destroyed parts of the popular SPAR shopping mall in Calabar, Cross River State, with goods and properties reportedly worth millions of naira lost in the incident.
The fire started in the early hours of Saturday and spread through one of the mall’s wings, affecting several businesses.
The affected section reportedly houses a pharmacy, clothing store, perfumery and phone shop, among other businesses.
Workers at the affected shops were seen in distress as the flames consumed their goods and belongings.
Only one fire service truck was reportedly deployed to the scene while the fire continued to spread.
The spokesperson for the Cross River State Police Command, Eitokpah Akata, confirmed the incident, saying properties belonging to traders were destroyed.
Akata said an electrical fault was suspected, although investigations are still ongoing to determine the exact cause.
“We don’t have a probable cause for now, but it is most likely linked to an electrical fault,” he said.
The police spokesman added that no casualty had been recorded as of the time of reporting.
He also disclosed that police officers had been deployed to the mall and a perimeter established to prevent looting and protect the remaining properties.
The police said further updates would be provided as the investigation continues.
