The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Ogun 1 Area Command, has intercepted 6,035 wraps of cannabis sativa valued at more than N2 billion in different locations across Ogun State.
The illicit drugs had a total Duty Paid Value (DPV) of N2,087,603,186.76, according to the Area Comptroller of the command, Olukayode Afeni.
Afeni disclosed this on Thursday at Idiroko while handing the seized cannabis over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for further investigation.
Customs warns against drug smuggling
The customs boss said the handover was carried out in line with established procedures and the legal framework governing seized illicit drugs.
He warned about the dangers associated with the smuggling and distribution of cannabis, particularly among young people.
Afeni specifically raised concerns about strains such as Ghana Loud and Colorado, saying their circulation among young people could have serious consequences for communities and schools.
He also linked the illegal drug trade to wider criminal activities along the borders.
Customs reports more drug seizures
Afeni disclosed that the Ogun 1 Area Command had, since January, handed over 32,412 parcels of hard drugs and 92 sacks of raw cannabis sativa to the NDLEA Idiroko Special Area Command.
He described the fight against drug smuggling as a collective responsibility and said the command would continue working to prevent illicit goods from entering the country.
“The command would continue to seize illicit goods and bring them down to their knees,” he said, referring to drug traffickers.
Receiving the seized drugs on behalf of the NDLEA, Director of Narcotics Adewale Fagbohun commended the Customs Service for its efforts.
He said the size of the seizure demonstrated the agency’s commitment to protecting Nigeria’s borders and disrupting the activities of drug traffickers.
The NDLEA also reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening cooperation with the Customs Service and other security agencies in the fight against illicit drug trafficking.
