Senator Francis Fadahunsi, representing Osun East Senatorial District, has honoured an invitation from the Osun State Police Command over a controversial comment attributed to him concerning members of the Accord Party ahead of Saturday’s governorship election.
Fadahunsi arrived at the police headquarters in Osogbo, the state capital, at about 2pm on Wednesday to respond to the invitation.
The senator was invited after a widely circulated video in which he was reported to have urged supporters of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to “kill” members of the rival Accord Party if they encountered them during the electoral process.
The comment has sparked reactions across the state as political activities intensify ahead of the August 15 governorship election.
Police Seek Clarification
The Osun State Police Command invited Fadahunsi to explain the circumstances surrounding the statement and assist its investigation into the matter.
The invitation followed growing concerns over inflammatory comments and possible political violence ahead of the election.
Fadahunsi had earlier faced criticism over the remarks, while his camp maintained that the statement was metaphorical and referred to defeating the Accord Party through votes rather than physical violence.
The police have repeatedly warned political parties, candidates and their supporters against making statements or engaging in actions capable of threatening public peace.
The senator’s appearance before the police is expected to enable the command to establish the circumstances surrounding the controversial remark and determine the appropriate next steps.
Security agencies have also intensified preparations for Saturday’s election, urging all political actors and their supporters to remain peaceful and law-abiding before, during and after the poll.
