Senator Orji Uzor Kalu has praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for approving a salary increase for members of the Nigerian Armed Forces, describing the move as a significant step toward improving the welfare of military personnel.
Kalu, who represents Abia North Senatorial District and chairs the Senate Committee on the South East Development Commission (SEDC), said the salary review demonstrates the Federal Government’s commitment to supporting troops who continue to defend Nigeria against security threats.
In a statement shared on his official social media handle on Wednesday, the former Abia State governor noted that the welfare of military personnel should remain a national priority because of the sacrifices they make in combating terrorism, banditry, kidnapping and other forms of insecurity.
President Tinubu recently approved a 30 to 80 per cent salary increase for military personnel, with the new pay structure expected to take effect from September 1. The review is expected to benefit about 250,000 personnel of the Nigerian Army, Navy and Air Force.
Commending the President’s decision, Kalu said the salary increase reflects the government’s recognition of the important role played by members of the Armed Forces.
“The decision by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to approve a salary increase for members of the Nigerian Armed Forces deserves commendation. It reflects an understanding that the welfare of those who defend our nation should remain a priority,” he said.
The former Senate Whip added that investing in the welfare of security personnel is not only a moral responsibility but also a strategic step toward strengthening the country’s security architecture.
Kalu also urged members of the Armed Forces and other security agencies to reciprocate the government’s gesture by remaining professional and respecting the rights of Nigerians while carrying out their duties.
“As this important gesture is being implemented, I encourage our military and other security agencies to continue to justify the confidence reposed in them by serving Nigerians with courage, professionalism, fairness and respect for human dignity,” he stated.
According to the lawmaker, a secure nation is essential for economic growth, national unity and sustainable development.
“A secure nation is the foundation of economic growth, national unity and sustainable development. With improved welfare, renewed commitment and the support of all Nigerians, I believe we can continue to make meaningful progress in securing our country,” Kalu added.
He reaffirmed his support for policies aimed at improving the welfare, capacity and operational readiness of Nigeria’s security personnel while praying for lasting peace, stability and progress across the country.
