Entertainment giant The Walt Disney Company has announced a new partnership with TikTok that will allow users to include clips from Disney movies and characters in their videos.
The company described the collaboration as a “first-of-its-kind agreement,” saying it is designed to give creators new ways to engage with Disney content while promoting its streaming platform, Disney+.
According to Disney, the deal will feature a curated feed showcasing fan-created content inspired by some of the company’s most popular characters and franchises.
“The agreement will bring creators to the forefront of Disney+, with a curated feed of fan-created content featuring our characters and stories,” the company said.
Although Disney did not disclose the financial details or specific terms of the agreement, it said the partnership forms part of its broader strategy to use advanced technology to expand storytelling and increase revenue.
The company has already introduced vertical video previews for content from Pixar, Marvel, and Star Wars on its Disney+ streaming service, adopting a format similar to TikTok’s popular scrolling interface.
Disney made the announcement while releasing its latest quarterly financial results.
The entertainment company reported that its revenue increased by seven per cent to $25.2 billion during the quarter ending June 27, surpassing analysts’ expectations.
However, despite the revenue growth, Disney’s net profit declined to $2.8 billion, down from $5.9 billion recorded during the same period last year, partly due to a higher tax bill.
The latest partnership is expected to strengthen Disney’s digital presence by encouraging more user-generated content while giving TikTok creators easier access to popular movie and character clips.
