TikTok has revealed that it removed 4.8 million videos uploaded by Nigerian users in the first quarter of 2026 as part of a stronger effort to combat misinformation, harmful content and violations of its Community Guidelines.
The latest Community Guidelines Enforcement Report shows that Nigeria, one of TikTok’s fastest-growing markets in Africa, recorded one of the highest numbers of content removals during the period.
According to the platform, the large number of removals reflects both the rapid increase in content creation by Nigerian users and the company’s expanded use of artificial intelligence (AI) to detect harmful content.
TikTok said most of the videos were identified by its automated moderation systems before users reported them, with the majority removed within 24 hours of being uploaded.
The company explained that the action is part of its ongoing efforts to make the platform safer by removing content that promotes misinformation, hate speech, scams, graphic violence and other materials that violate its policies.
TikTok also disclosed that it has stepped up efforts to monitor AI-generated content. Creators are now required to clearly label realistic AI-generated videos, images and audio.
To detect manipulated content, the platform said it now uses advanced technologies such as automated detection systems, invisible watermarking and Content Credentials.
Beyond regular videos, TikTok said it also strengthened the enforcement of its LIVE policies by stopping thousands of livestreams that violated its rules and taking action against creators who breached its monetisation guidelines.
The company said these measures are designed to educate users, improve compliance with platform standards and protect the growing global community of content creators.
“We continue to require creators to label realistic AI-generated images, audio and video content while deploying automated detection systems and industry-standard Content Credentials technology to identify such materials,” TikTok said.
The platform added that its safety strategy combines advanced artificial intelligence with the work of thousands of Trust and Safety professionals across the world.
“We remain committed to providing a safe digital environment by combining advanced moderation technologies with the expertise of thousands of trust and safety professionals worldwide,” the company stated.
TikTok also said it will continue working with governments, regulators and civil society organisations, including Nigeria’s Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA), to promote safer online spaces and reduce the spread of harmful digital content.
