The Anambra State Government has announced an indefinite ban on graduation ceremonies in kindergarten, primary and secondary schools across the state as part of efforts to reduce the financial burden on parents.
The directive was approved by Governor Chukwuma Soludo and confirmed in a statement issued on Friday by the Commissioner for Information and Value Reformation, Dr. Law Mefor.
According to Mefor, the clarification became necessary following inquiries and concerns from members of the public regarding the government’s decision.
He explained that the ban applies to all graduation-related events in kindergarten, primary and secondary schools, whether they are described as graduation ceremonies, passing-out ceremonies or crossover events, and covers both public and private schools.
However, the commissioner clarified that the directive does not apply to students completing Senior Secondary School (SS3).
“Graduation ceremonies for students exiting Senior Secondary School are optional and, where held, must not involve any levy or financial demand on students or their parents,” Mefor said.
He warned that any school that violates the government’s directive would face appropriate sanctions.
According to him, such sanctions could include the closure of the affected school.
The state government said the policy is aimed at easing the financial pressure on parents while promoting a more affordable education system across Anambra State.
