US President Donald Trump has paid $5.6 million to writer E. Jean Carroll following a court ruling that found him liable for sexual assault and defamation.
The payment comes after a civil jury ruled in May 2023 that Trump sexually assaulted Carroll and later defamed her by publicly denying her claims.
Confirming the development on Tuesday, Carroll’s lawyer, Roberta Kaplan, announced that her client had officially received the compensation awarded by the jury.
“Three years ago, a unanimous nine-person jury found President Trump liable for sexually assaulting and defaming E. Jean Carroll. Today, we are pleased to report that she has received the damages payment the jury awarded her,” Kaplan said.
The payment follows a decision by the US Supreme Court in late June to reject Trump’s appeal, allowing the original judgment to stand.
The case has remained one of the most closely watched legal battles involving the US president, attracting global attention since Carroll first accused Trump of sexually assaulting her decades ago.
Although Trump has consistently denied the allegations, the civil court found him liable and ordered him to pay damages to the writer.
With the Supreme Court declining to intervene, the compensation has now been paid, bringing another chapter of the long-running legal dispute to a close.
