Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi, has declared that no opposition candidate in the 2027 presidential election can match President Bola Tinubu’s achievements, especially in the area of infrastructure.
Umahi made the statement on Monday while inspecting ongoing construction at Section One of the Calabar–Ebonyi–Benue–Kogi–Nasarawa–Abuja Superhighway in Ebonyi State.
According to the minister, the Tinubu administration’s massive investment in road infrastructure will strengthen the President’s chances of securing another term in office.
He described the Calabar–Abuja Superhighway as a game-changing project that will improve connectivity between the South-South, South-East and North-Central regions while boosting economic activities across the country.
Umahi said that when completed, the highway will significantly reduce travel time, allowing motorists to travel from Ebonyi State to Abuja in about three hours.
“If you are in Ebonyi, you will get to Abuja in about three hours. From the South-South, you can get to Abuja in about six hours when these projects are completed,” he said.
The minister explained that the project will also connect with other major federal road projects, including the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway and the Sokoto-Badagry Superhighway, creating a strategic transportation network across Nigeria.
He commended the contractor handling the project for maintaining a high standard of work and disclosed that construction is progressing simultaneously from multiple sections to speed up completion.
Umahi also revealed that the Federal Government has approved the rehabilitation of the worst sections of the Edembe Road in Ebonyi State, with construction expected to begin in August.
Speaking on the 2027 elections, the minister dismissed criticism from opposition politicians, insisting that the Tinubu administration’s achievements in infrastructure would speak for themselves.
He argued that borrowing to fund critical road projects is a long-term investment that will improve transportation, stimulate economic growth and attract more investment into the country.
Responding to criticism from Labour Party’s Peter Obi, Umahi maintained that the ongoing projects should be judged by their long-term impact on Nigeria’s development rather than political arguments.
