The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has taken the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to court over allegations that about ₦800 billion from Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC) funds was diverted to finance political activities ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In the suit filed before the Federal High Court in Abuja, SERAP is asking the court to compel INEC to investigate claims that governors elected on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) allegedly made monthly deductions from their FAAC allocations into a fund reportedly meant to support President Bola Tinubu’s re-election campaign.
The case, marked FHC/ABJ/CS/1426/2026, was disclosed in a statement issued by SERAP’s Deputy Director, Kolawole Oluwadare.
According to the organisation, INEC should investigate whether the alleged contributions breached any provisions of Nigeria’s electoral laws.
SERAP is also asking the court to order the electoral commission to obtain full disclosure from the APC and the affected governors regarding campaign-related donations, including the identities of donors and the sources of the funds.
The organisation further wants INEC to review compliance with Section 91 of the Electoral Act, particularly on campaign financing, political donations and funding sources ahead of the 2027 elections.
“These allegations raise serious concerns about political finance transparency, electoral fairness, and the constitutional right of Nigerians to participate freely in their own government,” SERAP said.
According to the group, transparency in political funding is essential to preventing corruption, abuse of public resources and undue political influence.
SERAP argued that if the allegations are proven, the alleged diversion of public funds for political purposes could undermine the credibility of the 2027 general elections.
The organisation also accused INEC of failing to proactively enforce electoral safeguards designed to regulate political financing and ensure accountability.
It maintained that no political party or individual should be allowed to exceed legally permitted donation limits without proper disclosure.
As of the time of filing this report, no hearing date has been fixed for the case.
