Israel has reportedly shared intelligence with the United States warning of an alleged new Iranian plot to assassinate President Donald Trump, adding fresh tension to already strained relations between Washington and Tehran.
According to multiple sources familiar with the matter, the intelligence was passed to US officials this week and allegedly outlined a specific plan targeting the American president. However, US intelligence agencies said they have not independently verified the claim and were not actively tracking the alleged plot before receiving the Israeli warning.
Some US officials also believe the intelligence could be part of a broader effort by Israel to influence President Trump’s decision on whether to increase US military involvement against Iran amid escalating regional tensions.
Responding to the reports, the White House pointed to Trump’s recent remarks in which he claimed Iran has repeatedly targeted him.
“They want to take out the US leader — me… I’m on every single one of their lists,” Trump told reporters.
The latest warning comes against the backdrop of long-standing tensions between the two countries following the 2020 US drone strike that killed Iranian military commander Qasem Soleimani, an action Washington believes could still motivate retaliation against current and former US officials.
Despite the heightened rhetoric, US officials said diplomatic efforts to revive negotiations over Iran’s nuclear programme are still ongoing behind the scenes, with both sides reportedly aiming to reach an agreement by mid-August.
The report also noted that although US military planners recently prepared for possible strikes, those operations were suspended to allow diplomacy to continue.
Meanwhile, US intelligence agencies said they remain alert to potential threats against American officials but cautioned that the Israeli intelligence has not yet been fully substantiated.
