A devastating windstorm has left a trail of destruction across Jigawa State, claiming the lives of seven people, injuring 53 others, and destroying homes, schools and public facilities in several communities.
The disaster, which swept through 13 local government areas, has affected thousands of residents, leaving many families displaced and in urgent need of assistance.
Speaking on Wednesday in Dutse, the Executive Secretary of the Jigawa State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), Hannafi Fagam, disclosed that the windstorm impacted 5,403 households across 120 communities.
According to him, the affected local government areas include Dutse, Miga, Gwaram, Birnin Kudu, Ringim, Kiyawa, Babura, Kiri-Kasamma, Buji, Kaugama, Gumel, Gagarawa and Sule-Tankarkar.
Fagam revealed that four people died in Dutse, while one death each was recorded in Miga, Ringim and Sule-Tankarkar local government areas.
Beyond the loss of lives, the storm also caused widespread destruction to critical infrastructure. More than 47 primary and secondary schools, three hospitals, two police stations, residential buildings and several public facilities were damaged during the disaster.
He said the Jigawa State Government has already approved funds for emergency relief and support for affected victims, while officials continue to assess the full extent of the damage.
Describing the incident as a major humanitarian disaster, Fagam said the agency is working with relevant stakeholders to coordinate relief efforts for impacted communities.
He also appealed to development partners, humanitarian organisations, corporate bodies and well-meaning Nigerians to support the state by providing relief materials and other forms of assistance to victims.
The SEMA boss assured residents that the agency would continue its assessment and ensure relief materials reach those most affected as quickly as possible.
