Presidential hopeful and Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) leader Peter Obi has alleged that efforts are being made within the Federal Government to stop him from contesting the 2027 presidential election.
Speaking at a leadership programme organised by the NextGen Mentorship and Leadership Initiative at Madonna University, Okija, Obi claimed that moves were underway to prevent his name from appearing on the ballot.
“If you know what they are doing to ensure that I’m not on the ballot in 2027, you will be surprised. The Nigerian government is doing everything to ensure that I do not contest in this election, but I’m focused on the destination, not the obstacles,” Obi said.
Despite his claims, the former Anambra State governor insisted he remains committed to his political ambition and believes the challenges will not stop him.
Obi also called on all presidential hopefuls, including President Bola Tinubu, to publicly present their plans for Nigeria through an open debate.
“I challenge anyone contesting, including President Bola Tinubu, to a debate to explain what they want to do for this country,” he said.
Addressing students at the event, Obi urged Nigerians, particularly young people, to obtain their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) and actively participate in the democratic process.
“I’m not desperate to be President. I’m desperate to see Nigeria work. Don’t vote for me because I’m Igbo; vote for me if you believe I’m the most qualified,” he stated.
The former governor also spoke on insecurity, saying his priority would be to build a safer and more prosperous Nigeria if elected.
Reacting to the recent Federal High Court ruling that set aside the judgment compelling the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to register the NDC as a political party, Obi maintained that the legal setback would not stop him.
“They cannot stop me. They will fail. This is not the end of the road. We are committed to democracy, and I believe the will of the people will prevail,” he declared.
Obi further urged his supporters and Nigerians to remain peaceful while continuing to defend democratic values.
