Presidential hopeful and Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) leader Peter Obi has described the recent Federal High Court ruling affecting the party’s registration as “a hurdle, not a stop sign,” insisting the legal setback will not derail its political ambitions.
The Federal High Court sitting in Lokoja had ruled that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) should not recognise the NDC as a political party until all legal issues surrounding its registration are resolved.
Reacting through a statement issued by Peter Obi Media Reach (POMR) and signed by its spokesperson, Idris Zekeri, Obi urged supporters to remain calm while the party’s legal team reviews the judgment.
“We have received the news of today’s ruling regarding the legal status of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC). Our legal team is reviewing the judgment and will immediately begin the necessary appellate process,” the statement said.
Obi acknowledged that legal challenges were expected in the party’s journey but maintained that they would not prevent the movement from pursuing its goals.
“Today’s ruling is a hurdle, not a stop sign. Our commitment to providing a transparent, legitimate and formidable alternative for Nigerians remains unshakeable,” the statement added.
The former Anambra State governor also encouraged supporters, coalition partners and Nigerians backing the movement not to lose hope.
“Do not be discouraged; the vehicle may face a temporary breakdown, but our destination remains non-negotiable,” the statement concluded.
The NDC said its legal team is already preparing to challenge the ruling through the appropriate judicial process.
