Two police officers have lost their lives during a security operation that led to the rescue of nine kidnapped victims in Birnin Gwari Local Government Area of Kaduna State.
The Kaduna State Police Command said the operation was launched after intelligence reports revealed that armed bandits had abducted several farmers near Unguwan Sa’idu Village.
According to the command’s spokesperson, DSP Mansir Hassan, security operatives, including police patrol teams, the Police Mobile Force (PMF) and the Kaduna Vigilance Service (KADVIS), swiftly moved to the area and engaged the kidnappers in a gun battle.
The bandits reportedly fled into the bush under heavy pressure, abandoning nine victims who were later rescued by the security team.
Police said the victims were found tied with ropes before they were safely freed.
However, while returning from the successful rescue mission, the operatives reportedly came under attack after suspected bandits ambushed them along the route.
The attack left two police officers with fatal gunshot wounds.
Reacting to the incident, Kaduna State Commissioner of Police, Rabiu Muhammad, described the fallen officers as heroes who paid the ultimate price in the line of duty.
He extended his condolences to their families and assured residents that security agencies had intensified efforts to track down those responsible for the attack.
The police also reaffirmed their commitment to combating banditry and other violent crimes across Kaduna State.
