The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has dismissed speculation that FCT Minister Nyesom Wike may be preparing to join the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), insisting that he remains a loyal member of the opposition party.
The clarification followed recent praise from APC National Chairman Nentawe Yilwatda, who commended Wike’s performance as Minister of the Federal Capital Territory.
Reacting to the comments, the PDP said Wike’s role in President Bola Tinubu’s administration should not be mistaken for a change in political allegiance.
“Wike’s engagement with the APC-led administration is best viewed as a political loan arrangement.”
In a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Jungudo Haruna Mohammed, the party stressed that there is no agreement or plan for Wike to permanently join the APC.
The PDP maintained that the former Rivers State governor remains one of its key political figures and that his service in the federal government has not affected his commitment to the party.
According to the opposition party, Wike’s achievements in the FCT have earned him recognition across political divides, leading to praise even from members of the ruling party.
The PDP argued that such commendations reflect the quality of leadership within its ranks rather than any sign of an impending defection.
The party also highlighted Wike’s contributions to infrastructure development and urban renewal in Abuja, describing them as evidence of the competence of leaders produced by the PDP.
It further urged Nigerians to consider the party’s leadership credentials ahead of the 2027 elections, insisting that it remains home to experienced politicians and technocrats capable of delivering effective governance.
Despite ongoing political speculation, the PDP insists Wike remains firmly in its camp and is not on the path to joining the APC.
