The Kaduna State Police Command has arraigned 24 suspects in connection with the mob killing of a woman who was accused of child theft in the Maraban Jos area of the state.
The suspects were brought before a magistrate court in Kaduna and are facing multiple charges, including criminal conspiracy, public disturbance, destruction of property and culpable homicide.
According to police authorities, the tragic incident occurred after a woman was accused of child theft without any evidence to support the claim.
“The mob forcefully removed the woman from police custody before killing her.”
Police said officers initially rescued the woman from an angry crowd and took her into protective custody for investigation.
However, the mob reportedly stormed the police station, overpowered security personnel, dragged the woman out and set her ablaze.
The command said the 24 suspects have now been charged in court over their alleged involvement in the incident.
The court subsequently ordered their remand in a correctional facility pending further proceedings.
The case has been adjourned until July 21 for continuation of hearing.
Reacting to the development, the Kaduna State Government welcomed the arraignment, describing it as an important step toward justice and accountability.
The government also warned residents against taking the law into their own hands, stressing that criminal allegations should always be reported to security agencies for proper investigation.
