Former Lagos State Governor and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Babatunde Fashola, has called for stronger law enforcement, improved security and more accountable governance, saying these remain essential for Nigeria’s growth and development.
Fashola made the remarks while delivering a keynote address at the 2026 Law Week of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Ikeja Branch, in Lagos.
According to him, security and the rule of law are the foundation of every prosperous society and should remain a top priority for governments at all levels.
“Security and prosperity are inseparable.”
The former minister stressed that governments must move beyond political rhetoric and focus on enforcing existing laws and fulfilling their constitutional responsibilities.
He noted that countries with effective law enforcement systems are more likely to attract investments, create jobs and encourage economic growth.
Fashola also urged legal practitioners, law enforcement agencies and government institutions to work more closely in tackling crime and strengthening public confidence in the justice system.
He raised concerns over poor compliance with basic regulations, including the use of vehicles without registration plates, describing it as a threat to public safety and accountability.
On governance, Fashola advocated for evidence-based decision-making, urging leaders to engage citizens regularly and align policies with the real needs of the people.
The former governor also called for simpler legal language to make court rulings and legal documents easier for ordinary Nigerians to understand.
He concluded by urging legal professionals and policymakers to focus on practical reforms that would improve law enforcement, governance and regulatory compliance across the country.
