The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has re-arraigned a former Kaduna South councillor, Theophilus Madami, over an alleged N16.08 million fraud case.
Madami was brought before the Kaduna State High Court on a fresh one-count charge bordering on alleged obtaining by false pretence, criminal breach of trust and misappropriation of funds.
According to the anti-graft agency, the former councillor allegedly obtained food products valued at over N16 million under the guise of acting on behalf of Kaduna South Local Government, a claim prosecutors say was false.
The EFCC alleged that the transaction involved 4,020 cartons of pasta products belonging to a private company, resulting in financial losses for the victim.
Madami, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge when it was read in court.
Following his plea, the prosecution requested that he be remanded in custody pending trial, while his legal team sought bail on his behalf.
The court adjourned the matter until July 22, 2026, for a ruling on the bail application and ordered that the defendant remain in a correctional facility pending further proceedings.
The case dates back to 2019 when Madami was first arraigned over allegations of fraud involving Pyramid Supplies Services Limited.
The EFCC also disclosed that it had previously recovered N5 million linked to the alleged proceeds of the crime and returned the amount to the complainant.
