British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has announced that he will step down as leader of the Labour Party and resign as Prime Minister, bringing an early end to a turbulent period in office marked by political challenges and declining public support.
In an emotional address outside 10 Downing Street on Monday, Starmer said he was putting the country first and confirmed that the process to choose a new Labour Party leader would begin in July. He added that he would remain Prime Minister until a successor is selected, with the transition expected to be completed before Parliament returns in September.
Starmer’s departure follows months of mounting pressure within the Labour Party, a series of political controversies, policy reversals and disappointing election performances that weakened his position. Despite initially insisting he would remain in office, growing calls for a leadership change eventually forced a rethink.
The outgoing Prime Minister rose to power after leading Labour to a historic election victory in 2024, ending 14 years of Conservative rule. However, his government struggled to maintain public support amid debates over immigration, the economy, public services and other key policies.
One of the leading names being mentioned as a potential successor is veteran politician Andy Burnham, whose recent return to Parliament has strengthened speculation about his leadership ambitions.
In his farewell remarks, Starmer pledged full support for whoever succeeds him and expressed confidence that the next leader would continue the work of governing the United Kingdom.
