Former Senator Iyabo Obasanjo-Bello, daughter of ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo, has officially returned to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and secured the party’s ticket for the Ogun Central Senatorial District.
The development comes just weeks after she resigned from the All Progressives Congress (APC), citing alleged betrayal, disrespect, and unfair treatment by the party’s leadership.
Iyabo was formally received into the PDP during a rally held at the party secretariat in Abeokuta, Ogun State, where party leaders welcomed her back into the fold.
At the event, the Ogun State PDP Chairman, Abayomi Tella, presented the party flag to her and announced her as the party’s senatorial candidate for Ogun Central in the next election.
“I present to our revered sister, Prof. Senator Iyabo Obasanjo-Bello, this flag as the authority of the party for her candidature for the Senate in Ogun Central,” Tella said.
Speaking after receiving the party flag, Iyabo pledged loyalty to the PDP and promised to serve the people with integrity and dedication.
“I commit myself to the ideals of the PDP. I shall serve the people of Ogun State and Nigeria with integrity, humility and dedication,” she stated.
The former lawmaker represented Ogun Central in the Senate between 2007 and 2011 under the PDP before later moving to the APC.
However, her relationship with the ruling party reportedly deteriorated after she lost out in the APC governorship race and the party adopted another aspirant as its consensus candidate.
In her resignation letter, she accused the APC leadership of failing to honour agreements and treating her supporters unfairly.
Despite the political setback, Iyabo expressed confidence in her popularity, insisting she remains a strong force in Ogun politics.
“I am still the candidate to beat,” she reportedly declared.
Her return to the PDP is expected to reshape the political landscape in Ogun State ahead of the next general elections.
