The Democratic Republic of Congo made history on Wednesday after holding Portugal to a 1-1 draw and securing their first-ever point at the FIFA World Cup.
Despite facing a Portugal side led by Cristiano Ronaldo, the African nation produced a spirited performance to frustrate the European giants in their Group K opener.
Portugal appeared to be heading for victory after João Neves gave them an early lead in the sixth minute, heading home from Pedro Neto’s cross.
However, DR Congo refused to back down and found a deserved equaliser just before halftime through Yoane Wissa.
The Newcastle United forward rose highest to nod the ball past Portugal goalkeeper Diogo Costa, sending Congolese players and fans into celebration as the country scored its first-ever World Cup goal.
The result was even more remarkable considering the challenges facing the team back home, where preparations were reportedly disrupted by an Ebola outbreak.
Cristiano Ronaldo, making a record-equalling sixth World Cup appearance, struggled to influence the game and missed two good opportunities in the second half.
The 41-year-old forward was largely kept quiet as the Congolese defence stood firm against Portugal’s attacks.
Portugal thought they had regained the lead through João Cancelo, but the goal was ruled out for offside.
DR Congo also came close to pulling off a famous victory when veteran striker Cédric Bakambu struck the post late in the game.
In the end, the African side held on for a memorable draw that will go down as one of the biggest moments in the nation’s football history.
For Portugal, it was a frustrating start to their World Cup campaign, while DR Congo celebrated a result that could boost their confidence for the rest of the tournament.
