Former Kaduna State Military Governor and pro-democracy activist, Col. Dangiwa Umar (retd.), has urged President Bola Tinubu to prioritise security, justice, and economic welfare, warning that the ideals behind the June 12 struggle remain under threat.
In an open letter released after Tinubu’s Democracy Day speech, Umar praised the President for recognising military officers and civilians who played key roles in resisting the annulment of the June 12, 1993 presidential election.
However, he stressed that honouring democracy heroes should go beyond public recognition and be reflected in policies that tackle insecurity, poverty, and institutional weaknesses.
“I wish to offer my profound appreciation for your public recognition of the services rendered by some officers of the Nigerian Armed Forces,” Umar stated.
While describing the recognition as appropriate, the retired colonel noted that those who fought for democracy envisioned a nation built on security, justice, and equal opportunities for all citizens.
According to him, national security remains the most important responsibility of any government.
“If national security is missing, that would be the end of the discussion; nothing else matters. Nothing!” he said.
Umar explained that the June 12 movement was not only about civilian rule but also about building strong institutions, an independent judiciary, credible elections, and a government that works for the people.
“They craved for a democracy that included its most basic features; separation of powers, an independent and impartial judiciary, and a truly independent electoral umpire,” he added.
He also expressed concern about rising economic hardship and poverty, urging the government to implement policies that improve living conditions and create opportunities for Nigerians.
Despite his concerns, Umar said many Nigerians believed Tinubu would uphold values such as equity, inclusion, and transparency because of his long-standing democratic credentials.
“As a long-standing advocate of equity, equality, transparency and inclusion, many of us saw no reason to doubt your commitment towards a better future and a renewed hope for all Nigerians,” he said.
The former military governor concluded by urging the President to ensure that the sacrifices made during the June 12 struggle are not wasted.
“I advocate that those ideals become once again the cornerstone of your national policies,” Umar stated.
