Nigerian singer Brymo has stirred debate after calling on some of the biggest names in Afrobeats to step away from the pop scene and allow younger artistes to take centre stage.
Speaking during an interview on TVC, the outspoken musician criticised the dominance of established stars, arguing that it has become difficult for emerging talents to thrive in the industry.
Brymo specifically questioned the long-standing “Big 3” narrative often associated with Wizkid, Davido, and Burna Boy, claiming that the industry’s focus on a few established names is limiting opportunities for younger artistes.
According to him, the music scene should be creating more room for rising stars rather than revolving around the same names year after year.
“We need to stop talking about how new artists don’t have substance,” Brymo said.
He alleged that some top artistes are holding on to influence and refusing to make way for the next generation.
“The industry needs to focus on the barbaric behaviour in the background—some artists trying to lock down the industry for themselves, calling themselves ‘Big 3,’ ‘Big 4,’ wanting to be forever,” he stated.
Brymo argued that younger artistes such as Rema should currently be leading conversations in the pop music space.
“Right now, Rema should be like the biggest pop star in the country without any doubt,” he said.
The singer also urged veteran artistes to evolve creatively instead of competing in the same pop category with younger performers.
“They should shift aside. It is a pop scene, they should evolve into something else,” Brymo added.
He further questioned the relevance of radio airplay as a measure of success, insisting that popularity should be based on genuine audience connection rather than industry influence.
“Nobody likes your stuff anymore. Move aside, evolve. Become something better,” he said.
Brymo’s comments have since sparked reactions online, with fans divided over whether established Afrobeats stars should continue dominating the pop scene or make room for a new generation of artistes.
