Super Eagles midfielder Alex Iwobi has expressed pride in representing Nigeria, saying he has “no regrets” choosing the country over England as he prepares to earn his 100th cap for the national team.
The Fulham star is set to reach the remarkable milestone when Nigeria faces Portugal in an international friendly on Wednesday, marking over a decade since he made his debut for the Super Eagles.
Reflecting on his journey, Iwobi said wearing the green and white jersey remains one of the proudest decisions of his career.
“I am proud to be where I am today, proud to wear the green and white. I have no regrets choosing Nigeria,” Iwobi said.
The midfielder revealed that despite representing England at youth level, he always felt a stronger connection to Nigeria and knew where his heart truly belonged.
“I had represented England at youth level, but I always felt Nigeria was home,” he added.
Since making his debut against DR Congo in October 2015, Iwobi has become one of Nigeria’s most consistent players, featuring at multiple AFCON tournaments and the 2018 FIFA World Cup.
Asked about his most memorable moment in a Super Eagles shirt, the Arsenal academy graduate pointed to the goal he scored against Zambia in 2017, which secured Nigeria’s qualification for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia.
“My dad and mum were both at the stadium. We celebrated together afterwards. It was an exciting moment,” he recalled.
Despite coming close to major international glory, including an AFCON silver medal in 2023, Iwobi said he remains grateful for his journey with the national team.
“I would have loved to win the AFCON, but no regrets,” he said.
His father, Chuka Iwobi, also praised his son’s dedication and commitment to Nigeria, describing his international career as an incredible journey.
“Alex loves playing for Nigeria and always gives his best. No one can question his commitment and patriotism while wearing the green and white,” he said.
As Iwobi prepares to join the exclusive list of Nigerian footballers with 100 international appearances, fans continue to celebrate a player whose loyalty and consistency have made him a key figure in the Super Eagles setup.
