Senator Mohammed Ali Ndume has warned that President Bola Tinubu and the ruling APC should not underestimate the political challenges that may emerge ahead of the 2027 general election, describing the coming contest as a battle that could resemble a WWE showdown.
Speaking during an appearance on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, the Borno South lawmaker said growing opposition talks involving key political figures should not be dismissed lightly, despite the APC’s strength as the ruling party.
His comments come amid speculation that opposition heavyweights such as Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, and Seyi Makinde could unite under a coalition to challenge Tinubu’s re-election bid.
While expressing confidence in the APC, Ndume stressed that politics is unpredictable and opponents must never be taken for granted.
“The storm is coming, but I am not that worried about it. At the same time, I don’t take opponents for granted,” Ndume said.
The senator also took a swipe at some individuals within the president’s inner circle, accusing them of shielding Tinubu from the true realities facing Nigerians.
According to him, effective leadership depends on receiving honest feedback rather than filtered reports designed to please those in power.
“Those around Mr President are having problems telling him the facts,” he stated.
Ndume argued that many Nigerians are frustrated by prevailing economic and social conditions, warning that public dissatisfaction could become a major factor in the next election if not properly addressed.
He, however, noted that the Tinubu administration still has time to regain public trust through decisive actions and improved governance.
Predicting an intense political contest in 2027, the former Senate Majority Leader said all political camps would have to fight hard for victory.
“We are going to struggle it out together. It can be hard like the WWE; it’s going to be a tough fight,” he added.
Despite his concerns, Ndume maintained that the administration still has an opportunity to change public perception before Nigerians head to the polls.
