At least five Nigerian soldiers and three members of the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF) have lost their lives after terrorists launched a deadly attack on a military base in Mandaragirau, Borno State.
The assault reportedly occurred in the early hours of Friday during heavy rainfall, with the attackers attempting to take advantage of poor visibility to infiltrate the military facility.
According to Operation Hadin Kai, troops stationed at the Forward Operating Base (FOB) swiftly responded to the attack, engaging the insurgents in a fierce gun battle that ultimately forced them to retreat.
Military authorities said the soldiers mounted a strong counter-offensive that prevented the terrorists from overrunning the base and inflicted casualties on the attackers.
However, the intense exchange of fire claimed the lives of five soldiers, while three CJTF members supporting security operations were also killed during the confrontation.
Operation Hadin Kai described the fallen personnel as heroes who made the ultimate sacrifice in defence of the nation, commending their courage and dedication in the face of danger.
The military also disclosed that personnel injured during the attack were immediately evacuated for medical treatment and are currently receiving care.
Despite the attack, authorities confirmed that troops remain firmly in control of the military base and continue to conduct operations in surrounding areas to track down fleeing terrorists.
The military noted that the incident highlights the increasing desperation of terrorist groups facing sustained pressure from ongoing counter-insurgency operations across the North-East.
To strengthen security in the region, additional troops and operational assets have reportedly been deployed to maintain pressure on insurgents and protect vulnerable communities.
