Manchester United have moved quickly in the summer transfer window after reaching an agreement with Italian side Atalanta for the signing of Brazilian midfielder Ederson in a deal worth up to €45 million.
The Premier League giants are set to pay an initial €40.5 million, with an additional €4.5 million in performance-related bonuses, as they continue rebuilding their squad ahead of the new season.
Reports indicate that personal terms have already been agreed between the player and Manchester United, with Ederson expected to sign a long-term contract that will keep him at Old Trafford until 2030, with the option of an extra year.
The 26-year-old midfielder has been on the radar of several top European clubs following his impressive performances for Atalanta, but he reportedly made Manchester United his preferred destination.
Only a medical examination remains before the transfer can be officially completed, with both clubs working towards finalising the deal in early July.
Ederson’s arrival is expected to strengthen United’s midfield options significantly, especially after the departure of veteran midfielder Casemiro. The Brazilian is known for his energy, ball-winning ability, tactical awareness and box-to-box style of play, qualities United believe will add balance and intensity to the team.
The move also highlights Manchester United’s ambition ahead of the 2026/27 campaign, particularly after securing qualification for next season’s UEFA Champions League.
Sources close to the negotiations reveal that United managed to secure the transfer for a lower fee than Atalanta had previously demanded in past transfer windows, making the deal an important piece of business for the English club.
With more arrivals and departures expected in the coming weeks, Ederson could be just the first of several major signings as Manchester United look to strengthen their squad for domestic and European competition.
