Residents of Plateau State are once again grieving after a 52-year-old man, Joshua Bulus, was reportedly killed in a fresh attack by suspected gunmen in Dyan community, Riyom Local Government Area.
According to reports, the victim was ambushed by armed attackers late Tuesday night near the community and was killed before the assailants fled the area.
The latest incident has renewed fears among residents who say violent attacks have become increasingly common across several rural communities in Plateau State.
A local resident, Christina Gyang, described the killing as heartbreaking, noting that many families now live in constant fear due to the recurring violence.
Beyond the killing, concerns are also growing over the destruction of farmlands and threats to the livelihoods of local farmers.
The Berom Youth Moulders Association (BYM) condemned the attack and expressed concern over what it described as worsening insecurity in parts of Riyom and Barkin Ladi local government areas.
According to the group, several communities have recently faced attacks involving farmland destruction, cattle rustling and harassment of women returning from their farms.
The association alleged that about five hectares of cabbage and carrot farms that were ready for harvest were destroyed overnight in Gassa community, dealing a major economic blow to affected farmers.
BYM also raised concerns over reports of women being harassed while returning from farmlands in Ganawuri District, warning that the situation has increased fear and anxiety among residents.
The group noted that the latest attack comes only days after another deadly incident in Gwom-Ajang village, where several people were reportedly killed and others injured.
According to the association, continued attacks on communities and agricultural activities are not only threatening lives but also worsening displacement and economic hardship for many families.
The youth group called on security agencies and government authorities to take stronger action against the perpetrators, stressing that communities need protection beyond routine statements of condemnation.
They also urged residents to remain vigilant while supporting lawful efforts aimed at restoring peace and stability across Plateau State.
As insecurity continues to affect rural communities, many residents are calling for urgent intervention to prevent further loss of lives and safeguard farmlands that serve as the primary source of income for countless families.
